The Baltimore Ravens are one of the few teams that truly qualify as a ‘Super Bowl or Bust’ candidate entering the 2025 NFL season, which makes the amount of injuries they are dealing with through the first week of training camp noteworthy.

Yet, one Ravens rookie has quickly made a name for himself in his first taste of NFL action and could aid this Baltimore secondary if he makes the final roster for this season.

Reuben Lowery III Has Turned Heads Through the First Week of Training Camp

Childs Walker of The Baltimore Banner dropped his top five takeaways from the first week of training camp on Monday, which is where the name Reuben Lowery III quickly appeared on this list because of his impressive string of practices.

Walker wrote, “Reuben Lowery has already made his name ring out, and that’s no small feat for a 5-foot-9 undrafted defensive back from Tennessee-Chatanooga who’s surrounded by Humphrey, Kyle Hamilton, Jaire Alexander, Nate Wiggins, Malaki Starks, etc.”

Lowery was a menace Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2024 with 62 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and two interceptions. Yet, his smaller stature at 5’9” 192 pounds and playing at a smaller football program likely played a role in him becoming an undrafted free agent option for the Ravens.

Walker described one of Lowery’s best plays by writing, “Lowery picked off backup quarterback Cooper Rush during Thursday’s practice, adding to the pile of interceptions he’d amassed during organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. On a defense that has made creating turnovers its No. 1 priority, there’s no better way to seize coaches’ attention.”

On paper, the Ravens’ secondary looks pretty loaded at both cornerback and safety entering the 2025 NFL season, which makes finding a potential hidden gem in the form of an undrafted free agent an interesting proposition for one of the best rosters in the league.

Walker detailed how this secondary could be too crowded for Lowery in 2025 by writing, “But there’s a significant math problem confronting Lowery, even if he keeps it up. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta likes to say the team can never have enough defensive backs. He lived up to his credo in the offseason, not only signing starting cornerback candidates Alexander and Chidobe Awuzie but using three draft picks on cornerbacks and safeties.”

Lowery is off to a great start, but still has a considerable way to go before becoming a lock to make the final 53-man roster entering the 2025 NFL season.

What Injuries is the Ravens’ Secondary Dealing with Entering August?

Before the Ravens signed former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander earlier this summer, the organization addressed the cornerback position by signing Chidobe Awuzie to the roster.

Unfortunately, the veteran cornerback is still dealing with an ankle injury. Additionally, Ar’Darius Washington is still on the PUP list after tearing his Achilles last season, which could create some depth issues at cornerback if Alexander, Nate Wiggins, or Marlon Humphrey pick up an injury sometime before the start of the 2025 NFL season.

Lowery isn’t likely to factor into the cornerback depth chart for the Ravens given that he spent most of his time at safety in college. Yet, he could improve his chances of making the final roster if he proves capable of functionally operating as a nickel defender throughout the preseason.
