Green Bay Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs was put in “timeout” after taking down running back MarShawn Lloyd during Monday’s practice, the team’s first in pads.
Coach Matt LaFleur pulled Hobbs from a team period following the reckless tackle, which injured Lloyd.
“He sat me for a second, put me in timeout,” Hobbs said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “Let me think about my decisions. And I thought about it real good. … It wasn’t an intentional decision like, ‘Oh, I’m going to tackle him.'”
Hobbs, the team’s big free-agent addition at cornerback, eventually returned to 11-on-11 work and had no other incidents.
On the play in question, Hobbs tackled Lloyd low and at the legs, according to several reporters at the practice. LaFleur specifically said before Monday’s practice that he set expectations with his team about permissible contact entering the padded practice, and he wanted no tackling to the ground.
“We had a long talk and video showing the rules of engagement, showing the things that were good from a year ago and things that weren’t great,” LaFleur said. “Bottom line, we need everybody to stay up on their feet, we’re not going to the ground today, so that’s the expectation for our guys.”
Hobbs didn’t meet expectations and was reprimanded accordingly.
Hobbs previously had physical moments on at least three different passing plays during unpadded practices, and LaFleur said he talked with his new addition at cornerback about protecting teammates. In fact, he said everyone would be “sick to our stomachs” if someone ended up getting hurt.
Turns out, just two days later, another physical moment created an injury.
LaFleur will have to re-emphasize his message for Hobbs and the rest of the team as padded practices continue on this week.
“Compete to be your best, and take care of each other,” LaFleur said.
